Tall oil & chemical products division

This division is responsible for the most basic aspects of pine chemicals. Crude tall oil (CTO) is distilled to produce tall oil rosin and tall oil fatty acids, and in this field we can boast of being the largest manufacturer in the whole of Asia.

In early history, pine resin (rosin) was necessary items for caulking the seams of wooden vessels, waterproofing rope, providing light by torches and for numerous other uses associated with ocean shipping and naval activities in particular. The industry's chief products were pine tar and pitch from pine tree for sealing, caulking and preserving naval ships, from which the name Noval Stores was derived.

The processing of chemical products obtained from pine trees starts from semi-purified tall oil (derived from the Swedish word talloja), a crude tall oil.
Today, we call it Pine Chemical Industry because its applications have evolved in various other chemical industries.

This segment has a key role in Pine Chemcial Industry and current production in the North American region reaches 400,000 ton (30% share in the world).

Harima Chemicals, Inc. imports over 60,000 tons of CTO from the U.S. every year through its partner company Harima M.I.D. The Harima group operates the largest tall oil distillation plant in Asia, efficiently distilling CTO into rosin, fatty acids and pitch, and then producing tall oil rosin and tall oil fatty acids. Harima Chemicals uses most of these for the manufacture of a wide range of more highly processed products. Some of the tall oil rosin and tall oil fatty acids are sold to our customers.

Tall oil products and their applications

HARTALL: A group of products comprising tall oil rosin, tall oil fatty acids and other tall oil distillation products. Tall oil rosin is used in paper-sizing agents, in resins for use in paints, inks and adhesives, and in synthetic rubber emulsifiers. Tall oil fatty acids are similar in composition and characteristics to soybean oil fatty acids, and they are used in paints, surfactants, and detergents and as intermediate raw materials for a wide variety of industries.

BANDIS: Disproportionated tall oil rosin and disproportionated tall oil products. Potassium salts of BANDIS are water-soluble soaps. These are used as emulsifiers in the production of synthetic rubber and ABS resin.

HARIDIMER: Dimer acids produced by polymerizing tall oil fatty acids. These are used in the production of polyamide resins, polyester resins and the like.

DIACID: Dibasic acid produced from tall oil fatty acids and acrylic acid. This is also an important intermediate raw material for industrial processes.

HARTALL TP: A trade name for tall oil pitch. This is a by-product of the CTO distillation process, which includes non-volatile esters and neutral substances together with small amounts of rosin and fatty acids. Tall oil pitch is used as a resin for paints and as an asphalt additive.
